Celebrate 30 Years of High-Gain Legacy: Peavey 6505 II Reissue

The Peavey 6505 1992 Original is the result of extensive research and development to produce the ultimate rock 'n' roll guitar amp, featuring super rock crunch, harmonic-rich sustain, and screaming metal drive like you've never heard from another amp. The undisputed go-to guitar amplifier for scores of rock, hardcore and metal bands for its raw tone, relentless power, and road-proven reliability, the 6505 features 5x 12AX7 preamp tubes (6 in the 6505 II) and 4x 6L6GC power amp tubes, with presence and resonance controls and 3-band EQ for taming its notorious tone. These features, combined with its classic ultra-high gain preamp capabilities and monstrous 120 W power section, result in an amp with awesome stage presence and enough volume for any gig. For maximum flexibility, a footswitchable effects loop, preamp output and bright/crunch voicing switches (rhythm channel) have also been included.

Contrary to much folklore since the amplifier’s inception, the recipe has remained virtually unchanged. However, over the course of time, component suppliers have experienced changes of ownership and changes to their manufacturing processes, things which can ultimately influence tone and unit-to-unit consistency.

After countless hours of A/B comparisons, conversations with scores of users and artists, and deep dives into the amplifier at a component level, Peavey discovered some items had drifted. In particular, one of the most important items: the output transformer. The changes over the years resulted in a midrange that varied from amp to amp, so the purists at Peavey decided to search for a solution. That led Peavey R&D Team to develop a top-secret output transformer, made in an undisclosed location to mimic the magical crushing tone of the original version.

The 1992 reissue is true to form cosmetically and sonically, going as far as returning the original “block letter look” on the front. Often imitated, competitors have gone to great lengths to duplicate Peavey’s success, but no amp is closer to the original than this one.

Like the original 6505 head, the 6505 II offers two channels and features the same ingredients, like the new output transformers. Furthermore, the 6505 II adds separate EQ, Resonance, and Presence controls to each channel, giving you more control and flexibility. The new footswitch provides foot control of channel selection, effects loop, and the newly added ability to select the Crunch feature. Now you can instantly obtain that extra gain in the Rhythm Channel with your foot and never have to take your hand off the guitar. Finally, the Clean Channel has been added, completely redesigned to sound much cleaner, and has one 12AX7 devoted to just the Clean/Crunch.

Peavey is proud to reissue the 1992 original and the “Mark II” of the 6505 series.
