The OCIO framework is a widely adopted open-source colour management solution that has become a key component of modern visual effects and animation pipelines. As described by the Netflix Virtual Production On-Set Infrastructure guidelines: "Within VFX, OCIO is the industry standard for exchanging and applying colour transforms and colour pipelines to plates. Given the need in ICVFX to customise the colour pipeline for each setup, Netflix is advocating for OCIO to be implemented in every Media Player system to allow fully interchangeable and interoperable pipelines between vendors and systems."
Now, with its native integration in Disguise Designer software, creatives can ensure colour accuracy and consistency with the most commonly used tools in their production pipeline, from the earliest stages of design through to final delivery.
"Colour consistency is critical to maintaining the visual integrity of any project, and OCIO is the industry standard for achieving that," says Disguise Head of Product, Camilla Powell. "By integrating OCIO directly into our platform, we are bringing Disguise in line with colour management best practice."
The integration of OCIO into our platform was made possible with the help of a beta testing group made up of Disguise virtual production experts from around the world. The beta group was instrumental in providing feedback and insights that helped shape the final product. Their collaboration ensured that the workflow would meet the demanding standards of professional production environments while remaining user-friendly and highly flexible.
Benefits for Disguise users
One of the key benefits of the Disguise OCIO workflow is its seamless compatibility with the most commonly used tools in the production pipeline. Whether working in Unreal Engine, Maya, or other popular film production software, users can now maintain a standardised colour workflow across platforms, eliminating the need for manual colour matching. This streamlined process means fewer discrepancies in colour across devices, ensuring that the final product matches the original creative vision.
In practical terms, the OCIO workflow gives users complete control over colour transforms, look-up tables (LUTs), and display settings, all within the familiar Disguise environment. This allows for greater precision when managing complex virtual production setups, where multiple screens, cameras, and visual effects must align perfectly in real time.
The OCIO colour workflow is now available in the latest Designer software release, adding on to our existing ACES pipeline support. The new software release also includes related colour improvements including xR colour calibration in OCIO mode, support for default input and output transforms, and a new Colour Inspector tool for verifying content.
